Lupus Awareness Month Feature: Stacia Roundtree

Waking up at 3 a.m., Stacia Roundtree begins her day as an inspiration for many people, including her two daughters and husband. Doing everything with a contagious smile, many would never even guess that she faces a variety of obstacles, one being lupus.

According to the Lupus Research Alliance, lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes your immune system to attack healthy cells by mistake. This can damage many parts of the body.

Diagnosed with lupus in 2011, Stacia decided that she would turn her life around by implementing a workout and a new diet. Without eating well and working out, she would begin to feel very down.

"Running has saved me," Stacia said. "When I was diagnosed with lupus, I was in a lot of pain and exercise helps with that pain."

Stacia started her workouts with walking. At first, she aimed for 10,000 steps every day and worked her way up. One of Stacia's friends challenged her to run; she then signed up for her first half marathon in 2015

"I ran till I couldn’t run anymore," Stacia said. "I made it to about 7 miles."

Since then, she hasn’t stopped running and training. With the support of her husband, best friend and Be Our Guest Podcast Lizards, she continues to push herself.

"If you don’t run the day, the day runs you," Stacia said.

She always encourages people to just get up and start moving.

"Don’t quit," Stacia said. "Just keep moving."
