In celebration of Law Enforcement Week, our Bolder Spotlight of the month is Patrice! This tough woman embodies the message Leah sought to convey, of honoring those who protect us, when creating the "We Honor "skirt. Take the time this week to honor someone you know or someone you don’t know, that works in law enforcement and risks their lives for our safety. After hearing Patrice’s story, you will agree that she is truly an individual to be honored.
My name is Patrice Hubbard and I retired last December after 20 years with the St. Petersburg Police Department. I spent my last three years serving as the major overseeing the downtown corridor, the Traffic and Marine Unit, and the PATH (Police Assisting the Homeless) Unit.
I had a wonderful career and was able to meet and help so many people and make some amazing lasting friendships. I also met my husband at work, and he served 32 years as a police officer with the St. Petersburg Police Department.
When I saw the We Honor skirt, I knew it was a skirt that had to be in my growing collection of Bolder Athletic Wear. As a first responder, it has been a calling for me to put others first and be there during some of their darkest and most painful times. This skirt allows me to remember those times. When I wear it, I honor those still willing to face danger and run into what most would run away from. I wore my We Honor skirt for the first time at the Heroes Run in St. Petersburg in March. I had only been retired a few months at the time of the run, so several of the officers on the race course were my former employees and many of them are my friends. It was a memorable experience and an honor to wear such a meaningful skirt for the first time in the city I protected and served for 20 years with so many of my friends running with me and cheering for me.
I completed my first 5k in 2010, which was the Celma Mastry Ovarian Cancer Foundation One Step Closer to the Cure 5k. My mom died of ovarian cancer in June 2010, and I walked the race with my husband and daughters. My family participated in 2011 and again in 2012.
In late 2012, I had knee surgery and before the 2013 race, I decided to learn to run without injuring my knee. I joined Fit2Run in downtown St Pete and by February 2014, I had participated in 15 races, and 10 years later I’m still running with the same amazing group. We call ourselves The Sunrise Soles and we have formed incredible friendships that extend beyond running. I have traveled out of state and even out of the country to participate in races with my group and we often are wearing Bolder Athletic Wear.
In February 2014, my husband and I were at the Gasparilla Expo and we saw a booth for SparkleSkirts, now known as Bolder Athletic Wear. He encouraged me to give them a try and I purchased my first skirt and was hooked. I had worn skirts before that would ride up as I ran, this one did not. I never had a skirt with more than a key pocket and this skirt had three large pockets, which is so practical. I also enjoyed how comfortable and stylish the skirt was. By 2016, I owned about ten skirts and two custom skirts.
My youngest son was 13 at the time and was running races with me every weekend and had a pair of Bolder Athletic shorts that he wore all the time. He loved the pockets and cool design.
Fast forward to 2023 and 9 years later, I primarily run in my skirts, unless it’s too cold. I now have at least 30 skirts and am loving the new matching tanks, which I have 4 and 4 more in the process.
I have completed two marathons, 15 half marathons, seven 15ks, three 8ks, thirty-three 10ks, six 5 milers, and fifty-six 5ks. It’s hard to believe that I’ve completed over 120 races in 12 states, 1 in Europe and later this year will be adding a half marathon in Cuba and my third full marathon, my second in Honolulu.
In 2019, I became a Bolder Brand Ambassador and I recall Leah asking me to test wear a skirt several years ago. From then on, I started sharing the Bolder website and location at races. Many of my friends have become ambassadors and also share in my love for what Leah has created.
I recently played golf in one of my skirts and have a feeling I will be purchasing more for my golfing wardrobe. I am a 9-plus-year happy customer and look forward to wearing Bolder Athletic Wear in the years to come.

Back in June of 2021 I remember finally having the guts to step on the scale after months of pretending I was keeping up with my fitness. It wasn't good. Not only did I gain all the weight back that I lost post pregnancy 6 years ago, but I've gained more (thanks Covid!). I needed to get back on track and the best way I knew of doing that was to sign up for a race. But what race?
I pondered a 5k, 10k, triathlon, half marathon, 70.3 triathlon but I've done all of those before. Was it going to really motivate me to stick with training? Probably not. But a marathon. THAT has always been on the "unattainable" bucket list. "Why" you may ask. Well, after blowing my knee out freshman year playing volleyball at Gettysburg College, I was told that I'd never run again much less play collegiate volleyball. Being an athlete most of my life, this shook me to my core. That was all I've ever known. I was lost, scared, nervous about what the future held for me. What was I supposed to do now?
I transferred schools, fell in love, and became a typical mid 20 year old but still with a drive that had no outlet. With 5 surgeries on my knee under my belt, I held myself against the limits doctors, coaches and other professionals put on me. Fast forward a few years and I found myself a stay-at-home mom with 3 kids under the age of 2 (single and twins within 17 months).
Our local gym was offering 2 hours of daycare per day while I worked out. A break AND a chance to lose the baby weight, hmmm, yes please. I goofed off around with weights and the pool, again still not wanting to push my knee outside my comfort zone. I finally decided I wanted to try and cycle class. I was hooked. The combination of a phenomenal instructor with the quick calorie burn with little knee pain and I knew I found something I could stick with. But again, now what.
I became a certified cycle instructor and was considering attempting a triathlon again. I decided to push my swim and bike hard in order to be competitive and I ended up on the podium for my division a few times. I made the following promise to myself for the season, podium 3 out of 4 races and I'll train for a 70.3 triathlon. And guess what happened, a week after my third podium, I signed up for my first 70.3. I was back to being lost, scared and nervous. The distances for a 70.3 seemed SO unattainable (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run). I'd never completed any of those distances before and the run really made me nervous. How would my knee hold up?
Time to get serious about training. I found a training program that I could stick with and some pretty amazing training buddies and 6 months later, I completed Ironman Raleigh 70.3. A year later, I completed another 70.3 and a few more half marathons. I felt ecstatic and just when I started planning my 2020 race calendar, the pandemic hit, which brings us back to the beginning of my story.
I needed to put myself out there again, feel lost, scared and nervous. Get waaay outside my comfort zone and a marathon was the answer. I signed up for the Richmond Marathon AND the Marathon Training Team. I met some incredible people, ran a LOT of miles, and experienced everything from runners high to regret to the overwhelming sense of accomplishment. (Anyone else have a finish line ugly crying photo? No, just me? Cool.) So what does the future have in store for me, who knows? But what I do know is, you can always start over.

I was born and raised in Chicago. 10 years ago I moved to Florida where I live with my family which includes our two crazy cats Ozzie and Zoey. In October 2011, just before moving, I was inspired by my sister who was training for the Hot Chocolate 5k, and started the Couch to 5k program. Not long after, I discovered the WDW Radio Running Team. which raises money for the Make a Wish Foundation of America through the Dream Team Project.
In January 2012, I ran my first race with the team: the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend 5k. After that race, one of my teammates told me that I would be back for the half marathon and I laughed. But he was right - I ran my first half marathon the following January. Since then, I've run a handful of 5ks and 10ks, 20+ half marathons and 1 full marathon.
In 2020, live races were cancelled, but I ran more miles than I have in any other year - and 2021 is shaping up to be the same. Next up, WDW half marathon in January 2022!
My Bolder skirts are the only bottoms I run in. When it gets chilly (which doesn't happen often in Florida), I just throw on a pair of leggings under my skirt. In my neighborhood, everyone recognizes me as "the runner in the skirt"! I have 30 skirts (including two custom skirts for my team), so I have a bunch to choose from.
This past summer, I had a blast creating as many Disneybounds as I could using the skirts I have. During the hottest days of summer, sometimes being excited about a Disneybound was just enough to get me out the door.
I purchased my first SparkleLight for the Princess 5k in 2012 and my first Swing (Wild One) soon after. I love that I can look cute for a race without a lot of effort after the alarm goes off at 2 AM! The pockets are the best for carrying everything I need before, during and after a race....or wherever I may be when I wear a skirt when I'm not running. (I've lost count of how many pocket tours i've given over the years!)

Running is something I do for me and something that benefits others. Myself and running have a love/hate relationship and have for many years. I started running in my mid-twenties and then stopped. After that it was running because I had to while I was in the Army so it stopped being something fun. It wasn’t until my 40th birthday when running and I rekindled our relationship and races returned to my life. It may sound weird but I celebrated my 40th year running the WDW Princess Half Marathon with one of my best friends from high school who was also celebrating her 40th year. I took it one step further and ran the DL Half Marathon, completing the Coast to Coast Challenge.
As I got older and hopefully a little wiser, running became a release for me; mental therapy if you will. It was a time where I could unwind, calm down after a bad day, think, pray and become one with nature and it was helping my body become healthier. Most of my friends probably think I am a little crazy running 13.1 miles just for fun but they also understand it makes me a much happier person.
It was the end of 2014 after I retired from the Army (after 24 years) when I started thinking about how I could start giving back and then a television commercial for St. Jude was playing which caught my interest. As a child, I remember Danny Thomas commercials for St. Jude but as a child, you don’t really think much past the commercial. So I immediately went to Google and did my research on St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and although I knew it was for childhood cancer, I never realized what was hiding behind the curtain; cancer research, medical training, patient care, family care/support, sharing medical findings with other cancer hospitals. All of this and more for patients and their families and NEVER does ANY family receive a bill from St. Jude. Imagine the relief of stress from those parents who don’t have to figure out how to pay to get their child healthy. Hard to fathom.
It was like a light bulb went off inside me and it was then and there that I decided to sign up as a St. Jude Hero, someone who raises money for St. Jude and competes in running, walking, biking events. My first race as St. Jude Hero was my birthday weekend in April of 2015 in Nashville,Tennessee. There are an indescribable amount of emotions flowing in the room when you attend the sponsored pasta dinner and former patients of the hospital get up on stage and share their story of how St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital changed their lives. Heck, I’m tearing up right now thinking about it as I type. I knew without a doubt this was a calling to my heart and soul and away I could continue to give back and help others.
Running 13.1 miles for anyone isn’t always fun so I came up with the bright idea of dressing up as a superhero since after all, I was a St. Jude Hero. So every year for the past 6 years, I dressed up as a different superhero and ran the course being goofy, bringing smiles from runners and crowd supporters alike.
Before becoming a St. Jude Hero I was already familiar with Sparkle Skirts so I knew who my go-to was for my running costumes. And now that it’s been rebranded as Bolder Athletic Wear, you will see me on my training runs or on the race course in my skirts, capris or performance shorts leading the way to smiles and doing good for others by supporting St. Jude.
The first year I was a little nervous about asking people for money because let’s face it, who wants to do that?! Can you say awkward? ;-)
Surprisingly, at least to me, I had no problem raising the first year’s fundraising goal. I boldly raised the goal for the second year and again, my friends and family had no qualms about donating to the cause. Each year, I raised the goal and the donations continued to come in.
2020 was an interesting year since because of the COVID restrictions, the Memphis RNR half marathon I was originally scheduled for was cancelled. The official race may have been cancelled but I was not about to let that stop my fundraising or running for St. Jude. So I planned out my superhero costume and a local course for 13.1 miles and picked a date. Unfortunately the date I picked was one where the temperatures dropped and the wind was crazy BUT I donned my costume, grabbed my earmuffs and got out there to do what I promised to do for the kids at St. Jude.
This year will be the 7th year running as a St. Jude Hero and again I’ve raised the fundraising goal. I still have 3 months until the RNR Savannah half marathon in November and already I’m at 79% of this year’s goal of $4,000. I will continue to be a humble servant to the kids at St. Jude as long as my body allows me to. Currently I have back, knee and hip issues so I may not be as fast as I once was but I’m still out there doing it for the kids. I don’t care if I am out there one day walking with a cane or a walker, you will still see me supporting the children at St. Jude and you can bet your running shoes I will be wearing a superhero costume.
Next year I’ll be celebrating my 50th birthday so I’d love to meet and surpass the 2022 goal of $5,000. My goal is to one day reach the fundraising goal of $10,000.
I run for St. Jude!

I am Samanta, 36, a busy mom of 2 girls and 3 dogs. I work full time as a Conference Producer in energy markets. Outside of work, I am Spartan Global Brand Ambassador and athlete: endurance runner, competitive OCR & Spartan racer.
I also practice Muay Thai and all-weather paddle surfing. As an ambassador, I am proud to represent Bolder Choice in a practical way - by wearing my skirts every day - from office to sports.
Samantha about her kids: it was local OCR, but they also have run a bunch of spartans all over the place, Spain, France etc. I am pushing them to try new things and never give up! That is my message honestly!
I moved back to my native Lithuania after living 17 years abroad. Last 5 years I was in Spain in a very mild Mediterranean climate. Here in Lithuania, we have proper cold winters with -30C, snow, and ice that last 4-5 months and longer. So I tried ice hole.
Basically, people break the ice on the lake to make a hole and you get in!!! water temperatures are like 1-2 degrees but when outside you have -15 and nordic winds blowing..... it is quite something. So I tried once and I was hooked on it, my pb was 3 minutes holding in the water.
Now we have HOT summer here and I can't wait for the water to freeze again haha and I was wearing my skirts all the time, you probably saw all the winter pics. It’s cold but you feel as if you are doing good to yourself if that makes sense.

My family moved to Florida in 1998 and I cannot say I miss the snow. My Bolder Skirt journey actually began during a race expo where I was introduced to the best piece of running clothing I have ever owned, the WillRun4 cupcake skirt. From that day on I never ran another race without my Bolder Skirts. I have completed 24 half marathons and I am looking forward to finishing number 25 in a Bolder Skirt.
The more I wore the skirts for running and realized just how much stuff I can fit into those fabulous pockets I started to wear my skirts off the race course. I wore them to the theme parks to hold my phone and sunglasses, they are great for riding rides and not losing anything. I even started to wear them FISHING!!
My family and I have always used fishing as a way to bond and get active outdoors together. Whether I am bank fishing at the lake or offshore fishing in the Atlantic Ocean, I know the Bolder Skirt can withstand the elements.
And those amazing pockets hold all my fishing gear, from the pliers to my fishing glove (fish are slimy, yuck) to extra lures. The pockets help me stay hands free when I am reeling in the big catch of the day. The best part of wearing my Bolder Skirts while fishing is how adorable I look, I definitely think it helps attract the fish!

I'm a mom of 6 & a middle school cross country coach. I am a 3x Ironman finisher and I will represent TeamUSA for Long Course at ITU World's in Almere, Netherlands in 2021.
Current fitness goals are preparing for a 8 mile open water swim event around Mackinac Island in late August and then 3 more 140.6 distance triathlons between September to November.
My Bolder skirts are a vital part of my training. I can trust that I can wear them in any weather, any where, and I will not chafe. With as much training as I do, I don't have time to be sidelined dealing with wound care.
I've been part of the Bolder community for a LONG time now... at least 6 years. It was always kind of a running joke that you never divulge how many skirts were actually in your closet so that way you couldn't be accused of having "too many" #plausibledeniability
In December of 2020, I realized that I had a handful of skirts that I just hadn't worn for a while, so I decided that starting Jan. 1 2021 I would start working my way through wearing all of my skirts & not re-wearing a skirt until EVERY skirt had been worn... it's the middle of May & I still have multiple hangers to go before I run out of skirts.
Here are some highlights from Melissa’s #skirtoftheday posts:
Day 1: Picasso Blue: First run of 2021
Day 3: Disco: Strength work & yoga
Day 7: Fireswirl: 6 miles
Day 33: Lava Lamp: Added more skirts to collection
Day 38: Inverness: Socially distanced group run
Day 39: Crazy for Chevron: Sunday Funday Runday
Day 43: Custom Star Wars: Hike
Day 45: Oval Track: Morning run

]]>Volunteer Recognition Day is celebrated to honor and respect all volunteers around the world who are helping others without expecting anything in return. These volunteers dedicated themselves and large parts of their lives to helping the needy.
Our Bolder Spotlight this month is our sweet Bolder Buddy Te'Retta!
"For the past 6 years, I’ve served as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Chris Hope Foundation. Our organization provides services and support to families with children suffering from terminal illnesses. CHF empowering families makes me the most excited to be involved. Despite what families are going through, we always find ways to embrace families, bring a smile to their faces, and try to pull the focus away from what they’re going through. While I’ve been involved in numerous activities and special moments, one is near and dear to my heart. A few years ago, I was able to spend time with a young man named Dylan for a Local Memphis (ABC 24) TV interview. He was chatty, quick-witted, and excited about being there despite his illness. It was a great time to be with him and his mom and learn more about his journey. Though he lost his battle to cancer last year, I smiled at those precious moments.
Last year, we opened our first foundation home. Families coming in for treatment at LeBohneur and St. Jude don’t always qualify for housing. Our home may be another option for them. And it’s free of charge. Our founder and volunteers worked countless hours to renovate this house and make it a home.
Being a part of this foundation is fun, rewarding, and work... good work! Knowing that everything we do is to help breathe hope into a family’s life is worth it. We are in the process of preparing for this weekend’s Bowling Tournament, where I will handle oversight of about 20 volunteers. I will be there serving as well. I’m a firm believer in leading by precept and example!
When I’m not working with CHF, I’m on video chat with my grandson A’Zias; running, working out, and/or training; and empowering others to be their best self.
I’m a certified personal trainer and running coach (Total Concept-Fitness Coach), as well as a local co-Ambassador for Black Girls RUN! and Bolder Athletic Wear." ~Te'Retta
On this day, help someone who is in need. If you are not able to help directly, then you can help the needy by donating some money to volunteer groups or welfare organizations. The feeling of helping others will be so rewarding and satisfying.
Also, post pictures and create awareness about this day on social media. Tag us to share, using the hashtag #BolderVolunteerRecognitionDay!

I am originally from Massachusetts. I played basketball and some softball growing up. In 2016 I was diagnosed with a large thyroid cyst. I quickly gained a lot of weight. I finally had surgery in January 2017. It took a few months for my throat to feel like it could swallow foods again. In the meantime I just kept eating unhealthy foods and gaining more weight.
One day, while I was downloading some vacation pictures, one hit me. I saw how unhealthy I really was. I know how awful my knees felt every day. It was in that one moment, I knew I had to do something. Running was not something I enjoyed except the back and forth on the basketball court, but the constant running, stopping, turning did a number on my knees. The weather here in Florida at that time of year can be best described as swampy. I bought a treadmill at Walmart, I bought a Fitbit and got to work. I ended up wearing a t-shirt and denim shorts on the treadmill.
I started to really focus on nutrient foods and learning to fuel my body. I started losing weight and feeling so much better. When I went back to the doctor a few months later she was shocked and so happy. My weight was no longer in the obese category and more importantly my cholesterol went down in the normal category.
In January 2018, I was at a plateau and someone mentioned the group Hogwarts Running Club. I looked into it and felt right at home. Everyone is welcomed no matter what your fitness level is. You can only manage a half a mile, no problem! It was then I was introduced to the SparkleSkirts brand.
There was a pre-order of house plaid skirts and kilts. Our group was going to meet up in December of 2018 for the Universal Fun Run in Orlando. I thought I could try one of these skirts. Since it was a pre-order and would take awhile, I ordered two other HRC hikers. I wore one of them at the parks and realized how incredible they are! My phone, wallet, passes all fit in the pockets without a problem and I was so comfortable! Hello, theme parks in June are hot and I wasn’t miserable walking around in denim shorts. Decided right then I needed more of the hiker length (AKA SwingTall) and CasualFit for work.
Our official first race was the Universal Fun Run in December 2018. It wasn’t timed and had such a great time with my online running group. That event gave me the confidence to try other live races. I also love races that are charity driven. Our favorites are ones that are for children in foster care or charities that support them. Also with Potterhead Running Club (PHRC) (FKA Hogwarts Running Club), all our events are virtual, but on the suggested run date, we have thousands of people around the world walking and running together and supporting each other. I try an average of 30 miles a week and they are all in my skirts. My goal is about 1000 miles a year. Last year I ended up at 1,524.8 intentional miles. This year I am participating in an event for one of our sister online groups called Fans Run the World. The event is all year and the course is 365 miles and you just keep making laps until December 31st. I have about 100 miles until I finish my first lap. Also in PHRC we have two major events per year and each is 10 days. For personal safety there is a cap of 15 miles per day. When I first started on my health journey, I never imagined I could do that many miles in a day. I completely amazed myself on 10/25/2018 and capped for the first time. I had broken up the miles a few at a time!
Late that afternoon, I was determined and set out for the last 3 miles and it was nice out so I did laps around our neighborhood. On my last lap Miss V joined me and we just talked and walked that last mile. When I was done, I just couldn’t believe it. I had her take a picture and being funny she had to photobomb the picture. It was that day I decided that I am no longer worried about what my legs look like in the shorter skirts. No way was I going to keep walking in the swing tall. On a trip up to Universal for Rock the Universe, we all stopped in Sparkle headquarters (BHQ now) and I tried on Fresca and fell in love with it and the shorter length for my miles. Miss V is an amazing young lady, who is not girly (anymore). Our walking time gives us time to talk about anything and we have a great bond. I love when it is nice out and we walk at our favorite park next to Venice Beach. It is a nice 2/3 mile loop around a lake and the Gulf of Mexico on one side. I think my working out shows her that it is best to have an active and healthy lifestyle. When we do live races we always try and come up with fun outfits. When we do the races at Universal we wear our House Plaid skirts. Miss V also decided to wear her House Plaid skirt for her Senior Pictures that were taken in Universal. I have approx. 66 SwingTalls, and 30 SwingStyles. (That includes stock skirts, pre-orders and custom group skirts) Miss V has the Blacklight GoBold Capris and the SpareParts in Navy, Be The Finish, Mulitverse, 5 O’clock somewhere, Velocity, Deep Space, a pixel camo and the black and white HRC.
How many custom Bolder skirts or other Bolder garments do you have?
Swings: For Fawkes Sake, Goggles, Clever Girl, Funki Sweetie Denim, Gobble Gobble, Wild Confetti, Floo Flames, PurpleHaze, Swing Tall: Norbert, 3 different Whoville/ Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Grinch Chevron, Grinch Harlequin, Doughnuts, Spongebob, Hogwarts Castle, Spells & Charms, Poop emoji, I know I am missing a few (Currently in process, Pink Honeydukes, Blue Splatter, GreenHoneydukes, UO Love, & Weasley’s)
What is your favorite?
Oh that is a hard one. I think my favorite custom swing is my Goggles one. My favorite Swing Tall is a tie between my Hogwarts Castle skirt and one I call Norbert.
How is your experience with the Bolder custom team?
Can I just say how wonderful they all are? Years ago I would stop in on my way home from Orlando with fabric. Lily and I would come up with fabulous color combos and names. I thoroughly love working with Melissa on my skirts. She is always quick to answer a question and really has an eye for matching shorts with the busy patterned fabrics.
Help us help other BolderBuddies to find fabrics. Where do you get your unique and fun ones from?
I find fabrics at the big spandex stores online. Both are located in NYC, and can find some older prints there. I also love some of the smaller custom fabric groups on Facebook, but you really need to do your research on the company. There are a few really reputable ones. I think my favorite place to get fabric is from FunkiFabrics. It is located in the UK and there is a group in the USA that does group orders to save on shipping and fees. That is called FunkiFabrics Fans. I love their ColoureMe selections and creating my own color palettes. It is a great way to show off my personality. I have taken a simple gray scale chevron pattern and made it into something Grinch inspired.
How do you plan your customs? Tell us about the timeline?
I have 3 bins overflowing right now so I go in spurts with my skirts. I tend to send some up when I have vacation planned and want a few new swing talls. I also like to have skirts that match my Potterhead Running Club (and their sister clubs) event shirts, whether it is a swing for the tech material shirts or swing tall for their t-shirts. I have samples of fabric on a Pinterest board and like to look and debate which ones I should send. Seeing all the fabric in one place helps decide. I can move them around depending on what event may be coming up.
Future fitness plans or races
I had such grand plans for 2020 and signed up or planned to sign up for so many live races. Life had other plans. I am really looking forward again to Turkey Trots since those are low key and so much fun. I really hope that when it is safe to be in large groups again that Running Universal has their character races. I have my outfits ready... Goggles skirt and Fart Gun Shirt for the 5k and Clever Girl Skirt and Clever GirlRunning Club shirt. My fitness plan is to keep moving forward in live races or not, it is about maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
How much does a cute outfit motivate you? How has Bolder helped you in your fitness journey?
I do live by the idea, “If I have to work out, get all sweaty and gross, at least I can look cute doing it!”

With its recent rise in popularity, pickleball has quickly become one of the country’s most popular sports!
Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, Washington. Three dads – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum — whose kids were bored with their usual summertime activities — are credited for creating game. Pickleball has evolved from original handmade equipment and simple rules into a popular sport throughout the US and Canada. The game is growing internationally as well, with many European and Asian countries adding courts.
A couple of paddles, a ball and a net, and you’re ready to get started.
Players wear just about anything comfortable and appropriate for the climate: athletic shorts, sweatpants, wicking apparel, t-shirts, etc. Tennis-style dresses and skirts for females are common. Comfortable court shoes are a must; sneakers or running shoes do not supply the right kind of support for the side-to-side action inherent in pickleball. Eye protection is highly recommended. As for accessories, players may wear hats, visors, sweatbands and light jackets or sweatshirts for cold outdoor play. We are offering a new line of Pickleball Bolder skirts, shorts and shirts. Check here.
Whether you’re familiar with the sport or not, pickleball has an interesting history and an even more interesting rise to popularity. Prepare your paddles and widen your knowledge of this new sports craze with these interesting facts about America’s new favorite paddle sport.
1. Pickleball is One of the Most Popular Sports in the Country:
Today, pickleball is played all over the world—in fact, the USAPA recently estimated that over 400,000 people actively play this addictive game on a regular basis.
2. It’s Been Around for 50 Years:
Pickleball is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, as it was invented in 1965.
3. It All Started With Three Men, a Few Bored Kids and a Dream:
Pickleball was first invented by three dads up in Washington state. They created the game as a solution to their children’s boredom during the summertime.
4. The Evolution of the Pickleball Paddle:
Initially, pickleball paddles were made entirely of wood, however in recent years, lightweight materials like graphite and aluminum have been incorporated to lessen the weight of the paddle. The typical pickleball paddle is larger than a ping-pong paddle, but smaller than a tennis racket.
5. Not Your Average Ball:
Unlike tennis or pingpongping-pong balls, pickleball balls have holes (similar to the holes found in Wwiffle balls).
6. Slower Than a Speeding Bullet:
Due to the inferior aerodynamics of the pickleball ball, (thanks to its large holes), pickleball balls travel approximately 1/3 the speed of a tennis ball.
7. The Best Picklers Are Never “Pickled”:
In pickleball, players are referred to as “Picklers”, and those who have lost did not “lose”, they have “Pickled”.
8. When in Doubt, Stay Out of The Kitchen:
The 7-foot non-volley zone directly in front of the pickleball court’s net is called “The Kitchen”.
9. That’s a “Dink” Shot:
The term “dink shot” is used when a soft shot narrowly arcs over the pickleball net and lands in the Kitchen (also known as the non-volley zone).
10. The True “Pickle” Behind Pickleball:
Pickleball was named after one of the inventors, Congressman Joel Pritchard’s dog, whose name was Pickles.

In fall of 2013 I was feeling like I was losing the will to continue running, but I knew I needed it too for my health. I came across a Facebook group called I Run 4 Michael. The runners are randomly matched with sick or disabled children to run in honor of. The runner encourages the child to stay strong & supports them by letting them know you are in their corner, in return the children and their families cheer you on and support your running endeavors. Most runners even mail their medals to their matched kids, called "Buddies".
It was a long wait, but on March 3, 2014, I was matched with an adorable 9 months old boy named Junior!
Junior is a CHD baby, meaning he was born with congenital heart defects, as well as other medical phenomena. He has Vacterl Syndrome, double outlet right ventricle, atrial septal defects, ventricle septal defects, transposition of the great arteries and Heterotaxy. Junior has had 11 surgeries so far, 3 of them being open heart.
I immediately began running my heart out for Junior and his sick little heart. His mom and I communicated a lot via text and quickly discovered that we were not too far away from each other to be able to meet in person some day, he in NC and I in VA.
That day came on October 25, 2014 in the play space of a mall in NC. That day began awkwardly but he finally warmed up to me after a rousing game of peek-a-boo. This little boy has stolen my heart and I love him (and his family)like I love my own family. We have met up again multiple other times.
Once his family brought him to Va on weekend vacation and they were able to have dinner with me the night before a half marathon, that was amazing! I've traveled to NC to attend one of his birthday parties. He and his family have traveled to my home for a weekend two summers in a row. Unfortunately we have not seen each other in person since the summer weekend in 2019 due to Covid. Thankfully there is FaceTiming and Junior has messenger kids so we can video chat occasionally. I send Junior all of my medals and if I had to guess, I would say he has at least 100 of them at this time. I have found that many race directors support the IRun4 community and willingly give me an extra medal to keep for myself.
Every February is CHD Awareness month and I do daily posts on my Facebook page with CHD facts and I do a fundraiser for Mended Little Hearts Organization.
TODAY'S POST:
For now Junior is a healthy, bright, precocious 7 year old and he is holding his own. There will be future procedures and surgeries, he has to be extra careful when he gets sick, but we are grateful for the here and now. March 3, 2021 will be our 7th year together and I continue running and working out for him because I don't want to let him down. I want him to know I'm still here and I still care.

Stock – Generally immediate availability
Stock products are made to Bolder specs and kept in stock for as long as fabric lasts and popularity prevails. Only slight alterations can be made to stock items such as installed drawstrings, music holes, BibBuddies, NipTuck alterations, leg extensions and embellishments.
Made-to-Order – Can take up to two weeks for completion
Prepaid Pre-Order Program – Can take up to six weeks
A Pre-Order is offered when Bolder designs a new print. Usually, the “Pre-Order Window” stays open for two weeks but sometimes we will create a coinciding short window if a deadline needs to be met. Bolder chooses the styles that can be made under the stock price and offers either one or two coordinating solid colors.
Some Pre-Order projects are ONLY by Pre-Order and will not be available later, while some Pre-Order projects may have limited fabric leftover for future orders.
Once the orders are compiled, the fabric is purchased, delivered and production begins. Styles or custom details outside of the offered styles most go through Individual Customs.
Teams – Production time varies
Teams are simply a group of people who want garments made out of the same fabric. Fabrics are usually provided by an outside source. The team is managed by a Team Leader and the Team determines which versions/styles should be produced. Styles outside the Team’s choices must move on to Individual Customs. Production times vary based on fabric delivery, completion of Team requirements and position in the queue for production.
Individual Customs – Up to six weeks for completion
When garments require specific details, Individual Customs allows the most choices. Fabric can be sent to us or a Bolder fabric can be used. Variants can be specified such as body and undershorts colors, versions (1.0 or 2.1), changes to styles, such as adding hem length, print or solid leg pockets, hybrid sizing, etc. Garments are cut one-at-a-time, which allows for matching plaids at seams, centering images when possible and other details.

]]>August is #NationalGolfMonth! This month is all about encouraging others to get to the greens, whether they be new to the sport or returning golfers. Sharing personal stories is the best way to get others interested in an activity that the teller is passionate about.
We reached out to our Bolder Brand Ambassador and World Class Professional Golfer Laurel Gill, who embraced the purpose of National Golf Month by sharing a bit of her expertise with us. Not only is she an avid golfer, she is a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, where she has accomplished much, such as creating the USNA Women’s Golf Team allowing for a Women’s Golf Patriot League. Some of her notable golf accomplishments include: 2019 Veteran Golfers Association National Champion, 2019 All-Navy Golf Champion, 2018 US Armed Forces Golf Champion and 2018 All-Navy Golf Champion. Here’s our discussion with Laurel:
Who inspired you to start golfing?
My parents both influenced me in starting to golf. They wanted me set up for success since it's a big sport in the "business world". Now it's a family sport and I love being able to golf with them.
What is the best golf advice you have been given?
The best advice I've been given was to practice. The more you practice the luckier you get.
What advice would you give to beginners?
My advice for beginners is to not get frustrated.
What should new golfers keep in mind as they are starting out?
Golf is a tough sport and takes a lot of time and practice.
How have our Bolder skirts helped you?
Bolder skirts help me because they don't ride up, have fun patterns, look professional and are athletic. AND MADE IN THE USA!
Do you golf? What’s your story? Share your experience with us!
]]>Music is a vital aspect of any successful workout. It boosts your energy, brightens your mood, and keeps you going when you feel like quitting. Many will simply choose their playlist each day based on their mood without putting much thought into the decision. Interestingly, the science behind music will help your workout in ways you may not even realize when you make your selections with a purpose.
Our bodies sync with rhythms and beats without much thought on our part. This works in our favor when it comes to working out. Whether you need to increase your heart rate for a run or slow it down for some peaceful yoga, song selection is your best friend. The beats per minute (bpm) of a song set the tone for whatever activity you do. Using bpm to your advantage can be the push that you need to go farther in your fitness journey.
Want to improve your time or distance on the track? Complete more reps? Gradually increase the bpm of your playlist. Regulating your pace with songs that inspire you makes it easier to go farther and faster than you thought you could. Safely improving your average speed and endurance is not as difficult with some great tunes.
Sometimes the only way to get through a workout is to think about literally anything other than what you are asking your body to do. The discomfort you feel is nothing compared to the awesome beat you’re listening to. Allow yourself to get lost in the song and you will find that it doesn’t seem like it takes as much effort to go through an exercise.
There is no perfect playlist that applies to everyone. Only you know what you can handle and what you need to focus on. Generally, a pace of 120-140 bpm is found to be preferred for running. If you want to get a good sprint going, 160-175 bpm is a great goal. Winding down or going through a mellow yoga practice with 50-60 bpm sets you up to be in a restful head space. It's important to listen to your body and let it guide you when you're making your selections. All-in-all, when you find your rhythm, you’ll know.

Oversized Shirt & BOLD Black Dart Leggings
You're not really having it today. You might be bloated, or tired, or it might just be laundry day. Whatever the reason, the gym is not at the top of the list of places you would like to be today. What matters is that you made it. You are determined to get in and out with maximum sweat.
Bright Top & GoBOLD™ Capris
You're confident. You're ready to have a great workout and you don’t care who knows it. Your bright mood is as obvious as your shirt, and you are rocking both.
All Black
You're keeping it basic. Life is hectic enough without adding in the stress of assembling a coordinating outfit. You’ve got a lot going on and you just need a mellow look to kickstart a mellow mood.
You're all about the look. Who said you can’t accessorize at the gym? Bonus, you won’t be wiping sweat from your forehead every 10 minutes. If there are any downsides to this piece, I can’t see them.
Sports Bra & BOLD Endurance Shorts
You're 100% results-oriented. You are ready to see those muscles work. Layers of clothing will only get in the way of visualizing that rocking body you are working for.
Colorful GoBOLD™ Capris
You're feeling fun. Today is a good, stress-free day. Digging through your mass of black leggings to triumphantly pull out that bold color got you in the mood to take on the world in style. You might even test yourself with a new and challenging workout.
Printed Leggings
You're self-motivated. Your leggings are just as inspirational as you are. Creativity and motivation are major forces in your life and in your workout. Working out is hard, but you meet that challenge head on.
You do you. Who wants to look like every other person they see at the gym? You are not afraid to spice it up and make the boldest statement in the room. You know what you like and you go for it. You are happiest when you’re just being you.
Sports Bra Top
You're proud of your body. You’ve worked hard to get to where you are in your fitness journey, so why not show it? You feel good, you look good, and you don’t blame anyone for taking a second look.
Affirmation T-Shirt
You know you can't do it all on your own, and you're cool with that. Sometimes you need to be reminded why you picked up those weights or started that run in the first place. It’s not always easy to maintain that fierce energy that you feel at the beginning of a workout, and that’s okay.
You're reliable. You are here to keep each other accountable in your workout and provide motivation. Pushing through that last set in a tough workout is easier when you have a buddy right next to you going through the same thing and cheering you on.
Knotted Top
You're the most stylish girl in your squad. You give the best fashion advice and can save almost any look. Boring t-shirts are no match for your style powers. Who knew the fabulous effect a well-placed knot would have on a shirt? Oh, that’s right, you did.
You don't take yourself too seriously. Working out is not always the most glamorous experience. You could care less if you look ridiculous trying to follow along to a video online or holding a particularly unflattering pose. You’re having fun! Fun prints put you in the mood to welcome fun into your routine.
Half-Tucked T-Shirt
You're detail-oriented. Contrary to its laid-back appearance, an effective half-tuck is very difficult to achieve. It takes attention to detail and a bit of finesse to create the effortless facade that leaves other women wondering how you did it.
